A government clerk is frustrated and fed up with his job yet scared to lose his security, and so finds comfort in eating. His chances of promotion are dwindling as younger people join the public sector and are often given better positions than him. A chance meeting with a woman of independent means and who likes to have a good time challenges his perspective of life and his view of money and work. #Lost Property, part of the collection Gentlemen’s Agreement and Other Stories, contrasts the fears and obsession with money shared by many people with secure jobs and the seemingly carefree life of the woman engaged in private enterprise. I also briefly illustrate men’s hypocrisy towards such women.
